Thanks for everyones reply's. Tom, thats a great idea disconnecting the hydraulic lines with the bucket loaded. Do you think it will be difficult hooking the lines back up with the load in the bucket thus creating a lot of pressure? Eric

Kevin, I have used my neighbors 12" post hole digger several times and it worked great, no problems.

Jeff, If you don't mind I would appreciate hearing your problems with your 4100. I purchased a 4100 HST last July. Currently 60 hours, no problems, love the tractor. Thanks, Eric

I think those who don't think idependent turning brakes are important don't know how to use them. This is one reason I bought a JD. They have saved me several times in tight spaces and plowing snow. Eric

Bob, I have the same problem shifting my HST into High or Low Range. I ask my dealer if this could be adjusted and he said it wasn't possible. I simply do what everyone else is doing by simply pushing on the hydro pedal just alittle and it slides right in. It's actually no big deal.

Hello everyone; I contacted the JD rep today. Got right through with no problem. As I thought I didn't really find out anything but they did file a case number to the serial number of the tractor and for myself to file. In the event I have problems in the future (in or out of warranty), I may have some recourse to act on. They did tell me that the metal shavings I sent through the Satisfaction First Program would be reviewed and I would be contacted. I feel better knowing JD acts like they care but In response to todays replys
(1-29)I cannot argue with the fact that metal shavings are metal shavings and regardless of normal or not, that doesn't make it right. Should that transmission ever fail, regardless of the reason, I will always think about those metal shavings I found while doing the right thing by changing my fluids before the manufactures recommendations.

I would like to thank everyone for replying to my metal shavings issue. I just signed up with CTB and was suprised to see such a quick response, it's great. It sounds like it's normal. I also e-mailed John Deere on Wednesday night. Today when I got home there was a message on my answering machine from a John Deere Rep. She said she was reviewing my e-mail and would like me to contact her on the 800#. I think this says a lot for Deere&Company. I'll let you what she says. Got to go, just got two inches of snow, not much but enough of a excuse to get on my tractor.

Chris, I have a 4100 but have never had a post hole digger attached to it. I can tell you that I have drilled several 12" holes with my neighbors 4200. One feature the 4200 has the 4100 doesn't is a PTO clutch. It makes it very nice when drilling your holes nice and slow. Another thing to consider is the height of the tractor. His third link on the 4200 has a 3 position height adjustment when attaching tall attachments. When the 3rd link is placed in it's highest position and the lift arms are lifted all the way up, the bottom of the auger is only couple of inches off the ground. I know if I attached it on my 4100 the auger would drag the ground when moving from hole to hole.
I don't know if that would be a big deal. I guess my oppinion is I think if my main purpose is to drill holes the clutch on the 4200 is very nice, but if your going to use your tractor for other purposes the 4100 is a great choice.

Jim, I agree with you. I have R4 tires on my 4100 and my lift arms would hit when raised all the way up. I adjusted the links and the arms from narrow to wide adjustment but it didn't help much. I called the dealer and he suggested turning the tires out. It made a hudge difference. I have plenty of clearence. The tractor is much more stable with the loader and it's alot easier to clean the rear end of your tractor. I have several attachments and the pin widths are different on all of them. Turning the tires out makes attaching much easier.
